new experiences




The first day of rain since I arrived a month ago. At least this was a gentle rain. After collecting the children from school this afternoon we went to a Bubble Tea cafe with one of Josie's friends. Something I have always been reluctant to try as I hate things like tapioca and rice pudding. Urged on by Josie, and being reassured by her that I would love it, I finally decided to give it a go. While waiting for the tea Josie and I played a card game called 'Spot It'. Very easy but fast moving game which relies on being able to spot matching pictures very quickly. It was good fun even though I could never win as my eyesight was a bit of a handicap in being able to spot the matching pictures quickly.

On Josie's recommendation I ordered Mango green tea with no ice, 25 percent sugar and mango pearls. It was actually delicious. I am glad I had the sugar as green tea is quite bitter. The mango pearls were amazing.

Kerri and Richard have a lovely old bench on the front deck but the covering was wearing very thin. Kerri's mum had bought some fabric, chosen by Kerri, and we set about recovering the bench. Now neither of us had ever done anything liker this before but after four lots of upholstery pins (most of which just didn't work and a lot of laughing (what was that about a bad workman always blames his tools!) we think we made a pretty reasonable job of it! South to Wellington on the Northern Explorer

Check in was 6.45am so fortunately the station was only 15 minutes from the hotel. This train ride was to be my luxury treat for the holiday. Once seated the tables folded down ready for the first meal of the day. There were only a dozen passengers in this carriage so I was given a whole table to myself. Our menu started with a cold breakfast followed by a hot breakfast. Lunch was a quinoa mixed salad with roast lamb. Then mid afternoon we had cheese and biscuits with a chocolate pot with cream. Finally, just before we reached Wellington at 18.45, we had roast, stuffed chicken breast with vegetables followed by strawberry cheesecake.  In between these amazing meals we passed through lots of different landscapes. I spent several sessions in the open viewing car. It was very windy but so invigorating. A morning by the river, School assembly, Brisbane Open House weekend and the dog park.

Elliot's school celebrate NAIDOC each year with a full school assembly. NAIDOC is National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee.  'This theme for 2025 is: The  Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy'. This theme  celebrates the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC  week and focuses on the achievements of the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders. It also acknowledges the guidance of elders and the legacy they have built.' Each class had decorated a door in their classroom representing what they had learnt about the indigenous culture and 2 children from each class explained what they had learnt as a class.
