Hobbiton

Another 6am start for the long drive to Hobbiton. I've never read the book or seen the film so really didn't know what to expect.

On arrival we were transferred to another coach which took us to the site. As we walked around the site we were told of any of the tricks that were used in the film to make it as authentic as possible. This included the removal of all the leaves and fruit from an apple, a quince and a pear tree which were not mentioned in the book. These were replaced with artificial leaves and fruit to make them plum trees which are mentioned in the book. All food at Bilbo's birthday celebrations was real and as the filming of this would take 3 days the director,  Peter Jackson, commissioned a local brewery to produce a 1% stout for filming so the actors would not be too drunk to do their jobs. Finally we walked through an hobbit house so we could see the detailed inside. Everything was made at 89% the average adult size and was perfect in every way. All extras were to be between 5' 2" and 5' 8". Our guide missed out by just 1/2".A brilliant experience, just a shame we had to stick to a tight schedule.

Then of course we had to finish the tour at the pub, The Green Dragon - Hobbit size of course.
